Coming in hot, the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon (2022), has officially been renewed for a second season

The renewal was announced on Friday, 26 August, just five days after the series premiere on Sunday, 21 August. The news comes as a bit of a surprise to HBO executives (who stream the programme), as it was reported that the 10-episode first season cost just under USD20 million dollars (approximately RM89 million) to produce, per episode.

"We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one," said executive vice president of HBO Programming, Francesca Orsi. "Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV."

She went on to thank executive producers Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal, along with fellow producer and author of the epic Game of Thrones book series, George R R Martin.

The premiere night was said to have shattered HBO records with 10 million views, thereby making it the biggest premiere audience for a new show ever

Subsequently, HBO has also claimed that the total number of views have risen to 20 million after four days of playback

With a guaranteed second season underway, it seems as though plans were already in place prior to the airing of season one, where Martin talked about his plans for Season 2 during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

After years-long efforts to regain the success of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon (2022) seems to be living up to their predecessor reputation through continual successes.

Tune in to House of the Dragon on HBO GO every Monday.
