The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has implemented a policy to close Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman for motorists every Sunday to encourage a pedestrian-friendly city.

The policy came into effect on 28 August.

According to a Facebook post by DBKL dated Sunday, 28 August, the road closure will be from the Jalan Esfahan intersection to the Jalan Melayu intersection as their latest urban content programme.

The closure will be implemented from 6am to midnight every Sunday

In a report by New Straits Times, the public is advised by KL mayor, Datuk Seri Haji Mahadi Che Ngah, to utilise public transportation, such as GOKL Bus or LRT via the nearest stations, LRT Masjid Jamek or LRT Bandaraya, to head to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman on Sundays.

According to Astro Awani, this programme was a response by DBKL to Senator Datuk Dr Dominic Lau for the city's effort to upgrade pedestrian infrastructure as well as making Kuala Lumpur a carbon-free city.

Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, the Deputy Federal Territories Minister, stated that there will be activities planned to liven up the street scene, such as buskers' performances, creative arts showcases, as well as traditional sports programmes.

The effort has been well-received by netizens

Most agreed with the implementation, with a user commenting, "Totally agree. There should be more vehicle-free areas like this that encourages local vendors to set up business. It can also be a weekend leisure activity for families. Walking is also a way to prevent heart diseases."

Meanwhile, other netizens said the implementation will promote art activities, as well as attract tourists.

Another user reminds everyone to maintain the city's cleanliness while spending time with family at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

KL will be developed as a pedestrian-friendly city like Singapore and London:
